Local 1623 – Administration – Extension Granted
Please find attached the decision from the OLRB with respect to Local 1623 under administration. The extension has been granted.
Adopted constitutional amendments, resolutions, and strategic directions
Sisters, Brothers and Friends:
Enclosed you will find documents that reflect the decisions made at our 2019 National Convention: a copy of the Strategic Directions document for 2019-2021, as well as a list of adopted constitutional amendments and resolutions.
- Download the adopted Strategic Directions document
- Download the adopted constitutional amendments
- Download the adopted resolutions
The constitutional amendments came into effect on October 11, 2019, with the exception of the amended Trial Procedure that will come into force on June 1, 2020.
Strategic Directions, together with the adopted resolutions, will guide our work over the next two years. And while the national union will take the lead on this, there is much work that can and should be done in our locals, our councils and our divisions to move our union forward and help us achieve the goals established by delegates at our 29th biennial national convention.
We encourage you to review these documents and discuss how you can incorporate these goals into your work.
In solidarity,

IMPORTANT NOTICE – Member in Good Standing
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Dear Member:
It has been brought to my attention that CUPE Local 1623-00, 1623-01, and 1623-03, have not followed the correct practice regarding membership in good standing under the National Constitution.
There is a distinction between being a dues paying member and being a member in good standing:
Dues paying member:
Everyone under the scope of a CUPE Local 1623 Collective Agreement (including those of sub-units) is a dues paying member. Dues are collected off each pay cheque. This allows members access to the grievance process, all your rights under the Collective Agreement, and the right to vote in strike and ratification votes.
Member in good standing:
A member in good standing is equally entitled to the rights noted above with the addition of being able to attend membership meetings, being eligible to run for union positions (Executive, Steward, committees, etc.), to vote in local Union elections, budgets, by-laws, and motions made at the general membership meetings (GMMs).
Last June, the National Executive Board adopted the following changes to facilitate this process:
1- You must fill out a Membership Application.
(Please complete the online form to apply to be a Constitutional Member/Member in Good Standing.)
Online Application Form
2- Initiation Fee – (Temporarily waiving the initiation fee until June 30, 2020.)
3- By completing and signing the Application for Membership form, it is now understood that the applicant may be accepted into membership and has met the requirements of the CUPE National Constitution.
Names of the applicants are made available at the first membership meeting after the application has been submitted.
I encourage you to complete the online form as soon as possible to become a member in good standing.
PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO COMPLETE THE STEPS TO BE A MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY ELECTIONS/LOCAL BUSINESS MATTERS.
I apologize for this inconvenience, but we are required to follow the proper process. YOUR local runs on the involvement of its members; our system is democratic and your participation matters!
I look forward to seeing you out and engaging with your union.
In solidarity,
Martin Coursol
