RE: CORONAVIRUS (2019-nCoV) (Wuhan coronavirus)

The Wuhan coronavirus is a new virus that has been widely reported in the media lately. Originating in Wuhan, China, the coronavirus “2019-nCoV” is an illness in the same family as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome).

Workers in the sectors of health care and transportation are at a greater risk of exposure to the virus. Employers in these sectors should already have effective plans in place for regular day-to-day interactions as well as protocols to follow for pandemic events.

CUPE National’s Health and Safety Branch has developed an information fact sheet that includes measures of control to prevent exposure to the coronavirus in the workplace.

Apply to CUPE’s new regional trial panels / Candidatures pour les nouveaux jurys régionaux du SCFP

TO ALL CHARTERED ORGANISATIONS

Dear Sisters and Brothers:

We are seeking applications from our membership to serve on CUPE’s new regional trial panels.

At our last National Convention in October of 2019, delegates adopted a new trial procedure to deal with complaints and offences under the National Constitution. With this new procedure, trials will be conducted outside the local union, by three members from the region. These trial committees will be appointed by the National President, from a regional roster of trial panelists nominated by the National Executive Board. The new procedure and more info can be found at cupe.ca/trial-panelist-application.

If you are interested in being nominated to the roster of trial panelists for your region, apply before February 14, 2020.

We are looking for members who:

  • Are available on short notice to hear and decide cases
  • Have the capacity to listen and understand different perspectives
  • Have an understanding of human rights
  • Are comfortable explaining a decision in writing

For this first set of nominations, terms will be for two or three years.

Any CUPE member in good standing is eligible to apply, and we encourage you to seek the support of your local union for your application. As part of CUPE’s commitment to equality, we encourage applications from women, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, racialized people and LGBTQ2+ people.

We ask all interested members to complete the application online at cupe.ca/trial-panelist-application and attach a resume or a letter outlining their work and union experience.

Nous recherchons des candidatures parmi nos membres pour siéger aux nouveaux jurys régionaux du SCFP.

À notre dernier congrès national, tenu en octobre 2019, les délégués ont adopté une nouvelle procédure régissant les procès pour traiter les plaintes et infractions énoncées dans les statuts nationaux. En vertu de cette nouvelle procédure, les procès se tiendront hors de la section locale. Chaque procès sera mené par un conseil de discipline formé de trois membres nommés par le président national à partir d’une liste régionale de membres sélectionnés par le Conseil exécutif national. Si vous souhaitez faire partie de la liste des membres du jury pour votre région, posez votre candidature avant le 14 février 2020.

Nous recherchons des membres qui :

  • sont disponibles avec un bref préavis pour entendre et trancher des causes
  • ont une bonne capacité d’écoute pour comprendre différentes perspectives
  • comprennent bien les droits de la personne
  • peuvent facilement expliquer une décision par écrit

Pour cette première série de nominations, les mandats seront de deux ou trois ans.

Tout membre en règle du SCFP peut poser sa candidature. Nous vous invitons à demander l’appui de votre section locale pour ce faire. Parce que l’égalité est importante pour le SCFP, nous invitons tout particulièrement les femmes, les membres autochtones, les personnes vivant avec un handicap, les personnes racisées et les personnes LGBTQ2+ à poser leur candidature.
