Notice of Elections

 

Positions up for Election

  • President
  • First-Vice President
  • Recording Secretary
  • Secretary Treasurer
  • Trustees (3 positions)

 

The elections will exceptionally have the following timelines:

 

  • Notice of Election will be sent on Thursday, July 2, 2020, and nominations shall be received by Thursday, July 9, 2020, 18h00. Nominations and acceptance of nominations in writing can only be accepted from the Election Committee. A scanned copy or picture via e-mail with both the candidate and nominators signatures are acceptable. Nominations must be emailed to election@local1623.ca.   Nominations must be received no later than Thursday, July 9, 2020, 18h00.
    1. Nominations will include:
      1. Name of Candidate
      2. Position being sought
  • Statement from the Candidate accepting the nomination
  1. Name of Nominator
  2. Resume (each candidate can provide the Election Committee with a one page resume)

 

  • To be eligible for election to an Officer or Trustee position, on the date of being nominated, a member must be a member in good standing.
  • A member may accept nomination for one office

 

  • The Trustee receiving the largest number of votes shall be elected for three [3] years, the Trustee receiving the second [2nd] largest number of votes shall be elected for two [2] years and the Trustee receiving the third [3rd] largest number of votes shall be elected for one [1] year. Subsequently, one Trustee shall retire each year as the term for which such Trustee was elected expires.

 

  • In the event that there is only one (1) nominee for any position, the election committee shall declare that nominee elected by

 

  • When two or more nominees are to be elected to any office by electronic vote, each member voting shall be required to vote for the full number of candidates otherwise the electronic vote will be declared spoiled.

 

  • The Election Committee shall declare the elected candidate(s) in each contest who receive the greatest number of unspoiled electronic votes (plurality/first past the post).

 

  • In case of a tie vote, there shall be a second electronic vote run-off amongst the tied candidates within fourteen (14) days.

 

 

  • Elections will open on Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at 06h00 and close on Thursday, July 16, 2020, at 18h00.

 

  • The mandate for the President, First Vice-President, Recording Secretary, Secretary-Treasurer shall be from the day they are elected by the membership as a whole, until the next even year 2022 and nominations will follow their course as set out in section 10.

 

  • The local will use Simply voting in order to complete Election Part 1. Members will be able to vote online or by phone.

 

  • Only the members in good standing can vote.

 

  • Resume’s of the candidates will be available on the local’s website and on the union’s bulletin boards.

Bylaw Amendments Part 2

 

The bylaw amendments voting process will open on Monday, July 6, 2020, at 06h00 and close on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at 18h00.

 

Please note that ONLY members in good standing can vote on bylaw amendments per the CUPE Constitution.

 

In order to ensure secrecy of the ballot, Simply Voting Inc. has been hired as an independent third-party election provider.

 

Ballots will be encrypted and stored anonymously on their Canadian servers. The union will not be able to consult your

ballot or voting receipt. Election results will be certified by Simply Voting.

 

 

Online and call-in votes are accepted.

 

For members who have provided an email address on the Application for membership to CUPE local 1623 form, a PIN will be sent via email (Monday, July 6, 2020, at 06h00).

 

If an email address was not included, a PIN was mailed to the address provided.

 

 

 

The Part 1 amendments, which included fifteen sets of proposed bylaw amendments, were adopted in 2019.

 

The proposed amendments related to phase 2 was prepared by the Bylaw Committee. The Part 2 included five sets of proposed bylaw amendments;

National Campaign to Fix Long Term Care / Campagne nationale visant à repenser les soins de longue durée

This pandemic has hit us hard everywhere – but the staff and residents in long term care have been hit particularly hard. Four out of five COVID-19 related deaths in Canada have either been staff or residents of a long-term care home – the worst record in the developed world.


That’s why this week CUPE has launched a national campaign to Fix Long-Term Care – more details are available at www.fixlongtermcare.ca.


The campaign calls on the federal government to make Long Term Care an accessible, publicly funded, and universal health care service covered by the Canada Health Act. We are further calling for national standards of care, an increase to the number of staff and beds, and for the government to provide adequate and stable funding, removing profit from the system.


The website has an e-action where you can send a letter to Prime Minister Trudeau and your MP and has a sign that can be printed and put in your window to show your support.

Cette pandémie nous a tous durement frappés. Mais, le personnel et les résidents des foyers de soins de longue durée ont été particulièrement touchés. Au Canada, quatre décès sur cinq liés à la COVID-19 sont ceux de membres du personnel ou de résidents d’un foyer de soins de longue durée, le pire bilan du monde développé.

Nous réclamons aussi que le gouvernement fournisse un financement adéquat et stable, éliminant ainsi toute possibilité de profit.

Pandemic Pay Subsidy Protest – May 14

Both of these workers care for patients at the bedside (including COVID patients), but only one is considered a front-line worker in the eyes of the Ford government. Join our action Thursday, May 14. We are all on the front line.

Organize your members to take a few moments during the afternoon shift change on Thursday to protest in front of the hospital by holding up this poster. Please respect social distancing.
